I qualified with the IIHHT in body massage in 1997. I practiced as a mobile service up to January 2000. Due to a serious spinal injury at the end of January 2000 I was unable to continue.
After a period of 6 years of rehabilitation & physiotherapy I began practicing Body massage on family and friends, to see if my back would stand up to the physical demands. I found I could, although it did take quite a lot out of me. I happened across an article in " Today's Therapist" about integrated myofascial therapy, first practiced by John Barnes in America . I found it interesting as it was a very gentle therapy with very profound results & was not as taxing on the therapist. I attended the level 1 workshop in November 2007 & was literally blown away by its concept & results. I have since then attended a day workshop in thermal stone massage & a week's course on fit2therapy, which brings the gym to the therapist, using muscle testing & other techniques. I have just completed a 3 day workshop on anatomy trains (following body lines of connective tissue & postural analysis
I have joined the Federation of Holistic Therapists, which encourages members to expand & improve their techniques through CPD's (continuous personal & professional development), they require 10 points a year, which equates to 2 days.
Workshop attendance. I feel it is important to keep up with new techniques, to provide the client with a choice of up to date methods & treatments.
My treatments predominantly work with the connective tissue matrix, treating the body as a whole & working not only for physical release, but also where necessary an emotional release, as the two are very much connected, one directly effecting the other, consciously & subconsciously.
I am extremely passionate about my work & what I do. My greatest satisfaction comes from minimising pain or, in some cases, taking it away completely & maximising movement & flexibility where, before, it was greatly restricted.
Other courses I am looking to attend are: level 2 IMFT in September, an Art Rigg's workshop on deep tissue massage using myofascial releases technique, formulating treatment strategies.
Next year I will complete the integrated myofascial therapy with level 3 IMFT.
I am also looking to attend workshops in the ten common injuries with Dr Ben Benjamin
I have a therapy room at Courtney's Gym Monks Cross York (map link). Due to the close proximity of the gym I can utilise both my therapy room & the gym to enable me to make a full assessment of a client, as a result of this I am able to tailor a client's treatment, plan to their own specific needs, creating a strategy unique to them.
